Summary

The Kansas City VA Medical Center is seeking to hire highly qualified Maintenance Workers. This Term Appointment will Not to Exceed 2-Years is located in the Facilities Department. The Maintenance Worker performs demolition, renovation and construction of structures and utilities for which the service is responsible throughout the VA Medical Center. Although the position is not at the journeyman level, incumbent trains to perform at a level which approaches that expected of a journeyman.

Responsibilities

The Maintenance Worker performs demolition, renovation and construction of structures and utilities for which the service is responsible throughout the VA Medical Center. The major duties of this position include but are not limited to the following: Accomplishes assignments in all categories of engineering work (i.e. electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, mechanical, air conditioning, laboring and painting). Determines supply and material needs and properly submits purchase requests for same. Performs demolition, renovation and construction of structures and utilities at the medical facility. Properly interprets and uses drawings, prints and manuals for minor installations and repairs of equipment. Uses many of the hand and power tools and test instruments associated with the engineering trades and work assignments to accomplish tasks. Trains to perform at a level which approaches that expected of a journeyman. Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 am to 4:30 pm

Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker (Term)/PD08089A Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The work requires the ability to carry, lift and handle parts weighing up to 75 pounds. This type of lifting could be preformed for several days in succession. The duration should not be over long periods of time but rather to move or assist with the moving of items from one location to another. The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather and may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy. The employee may be subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation of harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, etc. The wearing of protective clothing may be necessary. Work schedule based on facility project completion.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

~ Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
