Program Director, Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Burn and Concussion Programs Department Trauma and Burn Administration Shift Days - Full-Time Requisition ID 2020-20599 Position Location Hospital Main Campus, KS City KANSAS CITY Category Leadership State Kansas Position Summary/Career Interest This position is responsible for the administration and leadership of the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Burn, and Concussion service lines for The University of Kansas Health System; and for planning, directing and coordinating initiatives around the growth, quality/patient safety, customer service, provider integration and consistency of practice for the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Burn and Concussion service lines for The University of Kansas Health System. Additionally, this position collaborates with key constituencies to develop and implement the strategic plan, financial performance, patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes for the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Burn, and Concussion service lines. Collaborates with the service lines’ Medical Directors to develop and formalize an integrated service line approach throughout. Leads the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Burn, and Concussion service lines in achieving strong financial performance by generating new revenue, containing costs, increasing the quality of care and service offered to patients, maximizing reimbursement and effectively managing the operations. Identifies and engages key stakeholders to build and maintain preeminent service lines. Accountable for driving preeminence throughout the assigned areas. Preeminence is being acknowledged as a leader in quality, clinical care, education and research by your peers. Acts as a partner of The University of Kansas Health System leadership team and participates in the strategic planning and the attainment of goals for area of responsibility. This position reports to the Senior Director: Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance.

Responsibilities Establishes and supports programs to address programs’ verification needs, and is accountable for ensuring appropriate Federal, State and local regulatory agencies' requirements are met within the assigned areas of accountability. Primarily responsible for all activities directed toward maintaining the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level I Trauma Center status and American Burn Association (ABA) Verified Adult and Pediatric Burn Center status for the University of Kansas Health System.

Provides leadership and strategic direction for the department heads of the divisions. Provides input and recommendations for hospital or system policy. Acts as a change agent to ensure consensus for best practice. Implements new patient care modalities and practice models. Re-evaluates changes for effectiveness.

Provides strategic operation direction in matters of performance improvement and measurement. Ensures the development of programs to enhance quality patient care. Establishes strategy to build quality into process at the patient level.

Leads by example to set strategy and focus on each functional area to hardwire objective accountability. Fosters a success-oriented, accountable environment.

Sets and achieves objectives to align to five star goals (people, service, quality, sustainability, and strategic growth) within the service lines.

Ensures the service lines’ impact contributes to the fiscal health of the system. Develops short and long term financial goals for service lines’ growth. Accountable for budget including multiple departments. Seeks and recommends potential opportunities for cost containment, and analyzes variances from budget plan or anticipated trends.

Develops a plan for assuring optimal service-lines’ capacity. Initiates outreach programs to support the desired referral patterns.

Develops system to evaluate every service line annually on specific criteria including infection, mortality and readmission rates, patient satisfaction, research, transport or transfer issues, etc.

Ensures talent management strategy exists for areas resulting in a skilled and high performing workforce, workforce learning and development, and retention rates and employee opinion survey results are approaching preeminent levels.

Coordinates and ensures the quality and validity of data reporting of patient statistics and outcomes across all entities. Data will be compiled, analyzed and reported to leadership and required State and National reporting entities. Oversees National benchmarking data including ACS TQIP and ABA BQIP programs.

Decision making over the latitude of departments and service lines is collaborative and clearly communicated. Pushes decisions down to lowest level. Practices and deploys evidence based decision making.

Provides leadership beyond the organization at the Regional, State and National levels for service lines. Actively builds and refines the regional/state/national system of care and profession through community partnerships, professional organization involvement and external committee representation. Advocates for legislation and health policy affecting service lines.

Responsible for the design and oversight of a comprehensive, evidence-based injury prevention program to include leading mechanisms of injury on admission and concussions.

Creates synergy with the KU School of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health education and research divisions to assure the highest quality provider talent, advancements in medical knowledge and rapid translation of new knowledge.

Qualifications  Requirements:

Requires a Masters degree with a minimum of 5 years of management experience in the delivery and/or development of a service line.

Management experience in an academic medical center and experience with trauma and/or surgical services.

Requires experience in a health system setting in a highly competitive market.

Requires experience managing multiple complex projects involving multiple customers.

Requires knowledge of American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons verification guidelines.
