The following duties are required of the position; they include,
but are not limited to:
The incumbent duties are as follows:
- Provides quality patient-centered patient care to both
inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18-65 and older adults
age 65+ as assigned by Service Chief, Emergency Medicine
Service.
- Has approved clinical privileges in the areas of his/her
expertise as related to the Emergency Department and in all areas
required to carry out the duties of his/her assignments and/or
responsibilities within the Emergency Medicine Service.
- Demonstrate sound decision making skills, both clinical and
administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to
enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.
- Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in
collaboration with other health professionals, medical center
staff, and management.
- Participates in the peer review process when requested.
- Participates in multidisciplinary activities involving the
treatment plan and discharge plans of patients in the Emergency
Department.
- Systematically evaluates patient care programs in the Emergency
Department.
- Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care
programs based on current concepts and finding from research and
studies.
- Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment
of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both
formal and informal.
- Successfully integrates patient care activities on Medical
Services and other patient care programs at the medical center and
in the community such as Social Work, Prosthetics, Home Based
Health Care (HBHC), and private nursing homes.
- Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating
seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments
so dictate.
- Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS within
prescribed timeframes.
- Includes patient/family/significant other/health care provider
in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health
education and treatment plan and in planning care on a continuum;
assists staff in the process of mutual goal setting
- Demonstrates skill in implementation of clinical practice
guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care
needs.
- Documents and rates administrative and clinical information in
a thorough and accurate manner
- Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that
impact on patient care or staff performance.
- Plans implements, and evaluates care based on age specific
requirements of the patient.
- Serves as a role model in assessing and evaluating patient
status and identifying priority needs for care.
- Develops the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving
as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a
leader in developing standards of care.
- Makes decisions based on current professional standards and
evidence based practice guidelines
- Assesses veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgement and
physical assessment skills.
- Identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems.

Federal Retirement Plan:
- VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement
System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement
plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE
basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is
a 401K-type plan
- How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically
contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA
contributes 12.2% of the employee s salary each pay period
for a total annual contribution percentage equal to
16.6% of the employee s salary
- Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the
private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of
their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal
Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of
50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are
eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up
to $31,000.
- The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic
contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary
in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the
employee contribution
- For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition
to full monthly retirement pay or pension
- In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance
coverage for retired personnel
- Disability Retirement
- Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5
years service
