In Kansas City, Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies (FM&T) manages and operates the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Kansas City National Security Campus.--This state-of-the-art engineering, manufacturing and sourcing facility produces a wide array of intricate components to deliver trusted national security products and government services primarily for the NNSA.--Honeywell FM&T's culture of integrity, commitment and continuous improvement enables them to deliver responsive, collaborative, and innovative management and technology services and products that translate into cutting edge solutions to complex national security issues.
The Process Automation Group seeks a Controls Engineer for development and integration of advanced manufacturing equipment automation. The successful candidate will have a degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution and work experience on programmable logic controllers; design, development, evaluation, and quality control functions on complex controls; and automation projects, offering innovative solutions to technical problems.

  • Applies math, physical science, and engineering technologies to accomplish advanced engineering objectives.
  • Integrates systems of manufacturing equipment with facilities, sensors, networks (IIoT), and other equipment.
  • Develops capabilities and provides technical assistance in the development, analysis, installation, and integration of equipment such as machine tools and manufacturing processing equipment.
  • Assists in preparing necessary budgets, justifications and reports used to procure materials, develop customer proposals, justify equipment modifications and upgrades, and procure test equipment. Assists in writing and reviewing specifications and procedures to comply with standard requirements and regulations, including all applicable codes and government regulations.
  • Interacts with internal customers, cross-functional stakeholders, and manufacturing equipment vendors. Makes occasional presentations and acts as subject matter expert in process automation.
  • Performs failure analysis to identify and implement root causes and corrective actions to minimize development and manufacturing costs of product and equipment.
  • Maintains cognizance of and compliance with applicable ES&H directives.
    Basic Qualification Needed to be Qualified for the Role:
    • US citizenship in order to obtain and maintain U.S. Dept of Energy "Q" level security clearance.
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited Engineering program.
    • Two or more years of relevant engineering experience.
      Additional qualifications that the ideal candidate would possess:
      • Knowledge of manufacturing or quality processes and techniques.
      • Ability to apply design, development, evaluation, and quality control techniques to complex engineering concepts and projects.
      • Ability to work without continuous supervision, with some latitude for independent action and limited decision making.
      • Ability to provide technical guidance, project management, consultative services, and innovative solutions.
      • Experience supporting advanced manufacturing processes typically requiring specialized qualifications and knowledge, including application of engineering principles and technology related to complex technical assignments.
        Demonstrated experience in the following areas:
        • Machine design & hands-on troubleshooting and repair experience of equipment
        • Programmable logic controllers (PLC), Ladder Logic, State Logic Design
        • LabVIEW programming
        • Industrial machine control - continuous feedback and discrete
        • Controls & instrumentation; sensor selection and setup
        • IIoT machine connections, data processing, and industrial networking protocols
        • Hydraulics, pneumatics, and vacuum technologies
        • Heat transfer and fluid dynamics
        • Automation Direct, Allen Bradley
        • Control System panel and cabinet design to NFPA, UL, FM codes and standards
        • Human Machine Interface (HMI) design and troubleshooting
        • Motion Control
        • Equipment purchasing specification writing and equipment buyoff
        • Computer vision application development
