Who you are:

Communications and External Affairs is a team of communications professionals including content creators (editorial, design, blog, website), media and messaging, social media, and government and public affairs experts. The team works closely across all units at Vera to deliver effective messages on issues in the criminal legal system.

As an intern with the communications department, you will work closely with the media strategy team on projects that cover a range of topics such as racial justice within the criminal justice system, bail reform, and immigration. You will also assist in refining and pushing the Institute's brand identity and crafting storytelling pieces based on research and data that investigate and call into question common narratives around mass incarceration in America and that are centered on dignity, equity, and inclusion. As part of the internship, you will learn essential skills that will culminate into a four-week project tailored to your individual goals.

Schedule

The intern should be available to work up to 35 hours per week during the summer. The dates will be between June 6th and August 12th with some flexibility to accommodate personal and academic schedules.

Compensation

The compensation range for internships is $16.00 - $25.00, per hour. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors including but not limited to experience and performance. Applicants may choose to receive academic credit. For those who need to earn academic credit, Vera will gladly assist in working with the school or program to make arrangements and meet requirements.

How To Apply

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Support the media strategy team in determining the best audiences for Vera communications and gain an understanding of the media landscape
Research on media markets for Vera's priority issues in the criminal legal system
Compile media lists in Cision to make high-impact connections with reporters to support Vera's overall communications goals.

Support the media strategy team with drafting and/or editing written communications deliverables to develop your skills as a media writer
Fact check and research previous Vera language to ensure communication deliverables are consistent with Vera's communication goals.
When needed, will support the media strategy team with drafting and/or editing written communications deliverables.

Collaborate with media strategy team members to create projects that advance Vera's communications goals and gain an understanding of executing a successful media project
Contribute to team meetings and brainstorming sessions
Supporting the creation of various reports that measure the team's impact

What qualifications do you need?

Required:
Currently enrolled in undergraduate or masters program in college.
Demonstrated interest in communications.
Care deeply about advancing gender and racial justice and ending mass incarceration.
The ability to work both independently and with others effectively and efficiently.
Able to operate with grace and poise in a fast-paced environment where many different types of people may be working.

Preferred:
Enrolled in a program related to communications or criminal legal system reform

List of required software applications:
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with databases programs is a plus.
